Family Photography Tips at the Beach

The beach always creates the most stunning backdrops for family photography sessions. Here in Southern California, we have some of the most beautiful beaches that make our hearts burst with inspiration and happiness. To make the most of your next family photo session at the beach here are a few helpful tips:

Time of Day
The best time of day to shoot is either sunrise or an hour or two before sunset. Usually, around these times, there are fewer people on the beach too, which means less chance of having strangers sneak in the shot.

Yes, the ocean is a stunning backdrop but most of our clients love shooting in locations that offer other fun options too. One of our favorites is incorporating the bright turquoise rails on Manhattan Beach pier, it adds a fun unexpected pop of color and the little ones always love running down the boardwalk. If your family enjoys fishing Hermosa Beach pier is a great photography location to document you and your family enjoying a hobby that everyone loves. Just cast a line over the pier and let our team of professional family photographers snap adorable pictures of your little ones faces light up as the reel in a fish or capture the look of disgust as your children touch a squirming worm. Or explore the rock pile in Redondo Beach and have fun balancing on across the boulders. Whatever it is that you and your family love to do at the beach it is our goal to capture beautiful and raw family photos for you to cherish for the rest of your life.

Pack some towels and allow your kids to let loose and enjoy running into the ocean. Snapping candid shots of your children’s faces as their little toes touch the freezing water is sure to produce a favorite family photo, plus it makes the shoot a bit more enjoyable for the little ones.

Outfit Tips

  • Hide the tan lines
  • Be consciousness of your nail polish color
  • It may be windy so be mindful of flowing dresses, tops, and your hair.
  • Neutral earth tones, blues, greens, and black usually look best
  • Avoid moisturizing right before since it often produces sticky faces that your hair and sand might stick to.

If you are looking for some cute candid shots of your family interacting together in a natural setting we always recommend bringing along some beach toys to play with. If you choose to sit on a towel just be sure it is in a color and pattern that you love! Other fun props that we love include beach cruisers, floppy hats, picnics, toy boats, surfboards, or even ice-cream cones.
