Congratulations mommy to be! Maternity photography is a must for any growing family, it is a beautiful time in your life that should be documented and saved forever. Show off that baby bump and be proud of how amazing it is that a little human is growing inside you!

We know that carrying a baby isn’t all rainbows and unicorns; it’s a period in your life when you often feel bloated and uncomfortable. So you may not feel like a swimsuit model, but don’t worry as professional photographers with years of experience in family photography it is my job to make sure that you feel beautiful and comfortable.

As you begin preparing for your maternity photo session here are a few of our favorite tips for ensuring that your lovely pregnancy glow shines through in all of your photographs.

1. Timing is everything

When is the best time to schedule your pregnancy session? Well honestly that answer will vary from person to person. As a general rule of thumb somewhere in the seven to eight month time frame is often the best. The goal is wait until you’re belly is big and round, but not too big. Being a model is hard work so it’s important that you don’t feel so uncomfortable that holding different positions becomes too much.

The twenty-eight to thirty-four week time frame is also ideal since it will give you enough time to display all of your stunning maternity photos at your baby shower and decorate your nursery. Plus, this way you will have that extra time to really admire your new pregnancy photos before things get too crazy and hectic as the due date nears.

2. Location, Location, Location

Where is the best location to take maternity photos? Again this answer really just depends on what you are most comfortable with and what you envision. There are three different locations that seem to be the most popular: The privacy of your own home, a photography studio, or outdoors. Really there is no wrong option!

We love the idea of personalizing your maternity session by having it in your nursery to show off all the new adorable baby décor you just bought. Or the romantic, relaxed feeling of taking your pregnancy photos on your own bed is always a favorite. The one word of caution that we have with choosing to have your photographs indoors is taking lighting into account. Natural outdoor lighting is the best so we recommend that you only go this route if your bedroom or nursery has large windows with lots of sunlight.

Studios are a great option if you are looking for something with more of a formal feel. Lately the airy feel of an all white backdrop has been trending, and for good reason! Keeping the background blank keeps the focus all on you and often creates a feminine ethereal feel that looks stunning in photographs.

Choosing an outdoor location wins in terms of popularity. The natural sunlight and endless location options and spots make choosing an outdoor setting an ideal option. Whether it’s on the beach, in the hustle and bustle of the city, or in an open field, opt for an outdoor location that fits you and your family’s personality and lifestyle. Plus with tons of beautiful landscapes and photography spots here inHermosa Beach and Los Angeles we know lots of amazing locations that we’d love to recommend!

3. Going Solo or Include Your Significant Other

Should I include my husband in my maternity photography session? Here at Heather Leyse Photography we can customize thematernity shoot to fit your specific wants and needs. If you would prefer to focus the photography session on just you and your adorable baby bump we will to just that! Or if including your significant other is important to you we of course can incorporate your loved one and choose poses that portrays the love you both have for one another and your growing family. Speaking of family photography lets including your other kids in on all the fun too! Nothing is more adorable than soon to be sibling shots of belly kisses and hugs.

4. What to Wear

What should I wear to my maternity photo shoot? We get asked this question all the time and it might just be the difficult one to answer. First and foremost being comfortable and confident in your outfit of choice is the most important. If you feel uncomfortable in what you’re wearing it will show through in your pictures. Choosing something that shows off your beautiful belly is pretty important too, since that’s why we’re taking these pictures right? Don’t hide your baby bump!

Lots of mommy’s to be will ask us about how much skin is appropriate to show. This of course is all relevant to your comfort level. We believe that lingerie shots or even nude shots are raw and beautifully vulnerable. As skilled photographers located in Hermosa Beach, California we of course will keep things appropriate and respectfully discreet!
